The Mission of the Faith Formation and Spirituality Commission is to prepare people of all ages and backgrounds to receive the sacraments, to help them deepen their knowledge and understanding of God’s call as we journey through life, and to support and encourage their spiritual growth and development so that they are able to show the compassion and love of Christ to the world.

Adult Confirmation


Purpose
This ministry assists adult Catholics who wish to receive Confirmation as they prepare for the sacrament.

Responsibilities
The Adult Confirmation classes coincide with RCIA classes.  See further details in the section “Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.”  Team members may serve in various roles, with corresponding responsibilities: teaching or sharing personal testimonies; acting as sponsors; coordinating a retreat or service project; providing hospitality; clerical support for sacramental paperwork; and much more.

Helpful Attributes
Adult Confirmation team members should be practicing their faith: attending Mass faithfully, receiving the sacraments regularly, and affirming all that the Church teaches. If married, their marriage must be recognized by the Church. They should feel comfortable forming new friendships with those who are in the preparation process and with the rest of the team. Other attributes depend on the particular role to be fulfilled.

Training & Time Commitment
If invited to serve on the RCIA /Adult Confirmation team, a team member will receive training by the RCIA/Adult Confirmation coordinator. Most roles require regular attendance at weekly sessions and occasional attendance at events on Saturday or Sunday.

 

Adult Faith Formation


Purpose
To provide our adult parishioners and guests a full and robust presentation of the Catholic faith in all its beauty and power, so that their encounter with its truth will lead to a continual conversion, conforming them ever more closely to Jesus Christ in every aspect of their lives.

Responsibilities              
Parishioners who assist in Adult Faith Formation may serve in various roles, with corresponding responsibilities: teaching or sharing personal testimonies in faith formation settings; leading small groups; assisting in our regular program offerings and special events through publicity, registration, hospitality, audiovisual recording, clerical tasks, and others forms of practical support; and much more.

Varies according to the particular program and support role

 

Baptism Preparation


Purpose
To help prepare parents and godparents for a child’s baptism, and to assist them in resolving to keep their baptismal promise to raise the child in the Catholic faith.

Responsibilities
In Baptism Preparation classes, Catholic couples with baptized children present short personal testimonies about the practical ways in which they have sought to raise their child(ren) in the Catholic faith.

Helpful Attributes
A couple should be practicing their faith: attending Mass faithfully, receiving the sacraments regularly, and affirming all that the Church teaches; their marriage must be recognized by the Church. They should feel comfortable speaking to a small group (usually five to fifteen parents and godparents).

Training & Time Commitment
If chosen for this responsibility, a couple will receive guidelines for sharing.  Most couples will be asked to share only once or twice a year.

 

Centering Prayer


Purpose

  • Sitting silently in the presence of God in a loving relationship
  • Opening our awareness to God and allowing Him to enter our spirit
  • We reflect these virtues in the calm and quiet way we live our everyday lives

Responsibilities
Participating and teaching the practice of Centering Prayer and other forms of prayer and reflection.

Helpful Attributes
A desire to come closer to God and approach our life in a calm manner.

Training & Time Commitment
No experience necessary.

 

Edge – Middle School Youth Ministry


Purpose              
This ministry serves our 6th – 8th grade members by helping them grow in their Catholic faith.

Responsibilities              

  • To assist in facilitating our Edge sessions and retreats
  • Some of the many different roles in this ministry include: small group facilitators, prayer leaders, music leaders, hospitality, food coordinators, service/outreach coordinators, and planning social/adventure events coordinators

Helpful Attributes
Willingness to give of time, talent and love for the youth of our parish.

Training & Time Commitment
Training is provided at St. Brendan by Faith Formation Staff.  Edge meets on Wednesday evenings during the school year.

 

Engaged Couples Sponsors


Purpose  

Married couples who are in good, stable marriages of at least 5 years serve as mentoring couples for the engaged.

Responsibilities 
To meet with the engaged couple over 5 several hour sessions using the materials that have been developed and implemented on a national basis as approved by the US Council of Catholic Bishops.

Helpful Attributes  

  • In a good marriage and willing to share that gift with the engaged
  • Good listeners and communicators

Training & Time Commitment

  • One day training session, all materials are provided
  • To work with several engaged couples a year

 

Family Night Out


Purpose              
This ministry serves all families of our parish to build community and teach our Catholic faith traditions.  One Saturday a month, from October through April, families gather for the Saturday Night Vigil Mass at 5:00 pm, followed by a potluck supper after Mass in the Social Hall and a faith-centered, family friendly activity.

 

 

Responsibilities              

  • Preplanning of themed activities, presentations, crafts, etc.
  • Liturgy preparation with children who will bring up gifts
  • Set up and clean up
  • Welcome/registration, emcee and prayer leaders

Helpful Attributes          
Fun, creative, loves building community, loves sharing and teaching Catholic faith traditions

Training & Time Commitment  
Approximately 4-6 hours of preplanning each month, as well as one full evening when the event occurs

 

First Eucharist


Purpose
To prepare a child (usually 2nd grade) to receive the sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time.

Responsibilities              

  • Help facilitate First Reconciliation and First Communion Workshops
  • Help coordinate any photography or receptions afterwards

Helpful Attributes
Those who serve in this ministry have a love for Christ that draws them to the Eucharist.   They seek to be an integral part of the sacramental preparation of our youngest members.

Training is provided at St. Brendan’s by Faith Formation Staff.

 

Life Teen – High School Youth Ministry


Purpose                               
This ministry serves our 9th – 12th grade members by helping them grow in their Catholic faith.

Responsibilities

  • To assist in facilitating our Life Teen sessions and retreats
  • Many different roles in this ministry – small group facilitators, prayer leaders, music leaders, hospitality, and food coordinators, coordinators for service projects, mission trips, socials and outings

Willingness to give of time, talent and love for the youth of our parish.

Training & Time Commitment
Training is provided at St. Brendan by Faith Formation Staff.   Life Teen meets on Sunday evenings during the school year.

 

Marriage Encounter


Purpose
Worldwide Marriage Encounter (ME) is a weekend experience for couples who wish to enhance their marriage, have greater intimacy in their relationship and learn more about the full breadth and power of their Sacrament.  On the weekend you will learn a unique method of communication and other tools to help you refresh, revitalize, and deepen your love for one another.

  • Willingness and desire to learn how to communicate more effectively, learn what your personality style is and how it affects your relationship, learn how to attain forgiveness and healing in your relationship

There is no training or time commitment; just a willingness to use the tools and concepts learned on the ME weekend.

 

Men’s Group


Purpose
Provides a forum for men of the parish to gather together to share their faith and discuss their thoughts about daily life as Catholics

Responsibilities              
Regular attendance of meetings

Willingness to discuss faith life

Training & Time Commitment
Weekly meetings and some outside reading.

 

Parish School of Religion (PSR)


Purpose
This ministry serves our children from Kindergarten through 5th grade.   Children learn and grow in their Catholic faith in a classroom setting.

Responsibilities              
Teaching and evangelizing our youth

Helpful Attributes
Must enjoy working with children and sharing the faith

Training & Time Commitment
Training is provided at St. Brendan’s by Faith Formation staff at various times during the year. * Classes meet weekly for 75 minutes on various days and times.

*In addition, optional Archdiocesan training days will be offered throughout the year for Catechist certification.

 

Prayer Partners


Purpose
To listen to the needs of our community and to pray for those needs.

 

 

Responsibilities

To participate, a member submits their e-mail address to the Prayer Group leader.  When someone asks the Church or a parishioner to pray for them, the name and prayer intention is submitted via e-mail to all those on the Prayer Partner list.  Once the e-mail is received, the Prayer Partner group is asked to pray immediately for those needs and then during the upcoming days remember to say some prayers for all who are on the prayer list.

Training & Time Commitment

No training required and just a few minutes each day to pray for the needs of our community.

Returning Catholics


Purpose
To assist Catholics who have been away from the Catholic Church to return to the Faith.

Responsibilities
Helping a returning Catholic through prayer, friendship, personal witness, answering questions, and finding ways to help him or her reconnect with parish life through the sacraments, faith formation opportunities, and service.

Helpful Attributes
Personal experience as a “returned Catholic” is especially helpful (though not essential), and a willingness to walk alongside someone on this journey home to the Church.

Training & Time Commitment
Varies according to the needs of the people being assisted.

 

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)


Purpose
This ministry assists those who are not Catholic but want to know more about the Catholic faith. If they decide to become Catholic, it provides the process for learning about the Faith and preparing to receive the Sacraments of Initiation for entrance into the Church.

Responsibilities
The RCIA team members may serve in various roles, with corresponding responsibilities: teaching or sharing personal testimonies, acting as sponsors, coordinating a retreat and a service project, providing hospitality, clerical support for sacramental paperwork, and much more.

Helpful Attributes

Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC)


Purpose
This ministry prepares children beyond the age of 7 for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist) in concert with their parents who attend the sessions with them.

Responsibilities
There are many roles within this ministry: sponsoring, faith sharing, presenting, and facilitating small groups. In addition, team members are needed to help with administrative duties and coordinating refreshments.

Helpful Attributes
Adults and young adults who would enjoy accompanying a child or teen on their faith journey.

Training & Time Commitment
Most training is provided by those already involved in the ministry through the parish.

 

Voyagers Women’s Group


Purpose
A women’s spirituality group that helps women to learn about their faith, come into a fuller realization of God’s presence in their everyday experiences, and to grow in relationship with God and each other.

Responsibilities
To join with other women of the parish to learn and grow in faith.

Helpful Attributes
An open heart and willingness to share.

Training & Time Commitment
Any training is done within the group.  Weekly meetings are scheduled.

 

Walking With Purpose

Responsibilities
Walking With Purpose aims to bring women to a deeper personal relationship with Jesus Christ by offering personal study and small group discussion that link our everyday challenges and struggles with the solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church.  It endeavors to meet women where they are – giving practical teaching from the Bible that is consistent with Church doctrine.

Are you interested in getting together with a group of women to explore your faith?  Women of all ages and stages in life are welcome.  You don’t have a lot of scripture knowledge, but you would like to see how the scriptures apply to your everyday life?  We invite you to consider joining Walking With Purpose at St. Brendan’s Catholic Church.

Training & Time Commitment
No training or experience needed. Come as you are. The group meets weekly with breaks for holidays and school vacations.

 

Youth Confirmation


Purpose

To prepare individuals to receive this sacrament which gives the Holy Spirit in order to bind us more closely to God and strengthen our bond with the Catholic Church.

Responsibilities              

  • To assist in facilitating our Life Teen Confirmation sessions and retreats
  • Confirmed adults or young adults who work in this ministry will feel called to be an integral part of the sacramental preparation of our teens

Helpful Attributes
Would enjoy accompanying candidates on their faith journey.

Training & Time Commitment                  
Training for this ministry will be offered by the parish Youth Minister. In addition, Archdiocesan training days will be offered periodically throughout the year for continuing Catechist education and certification. Life Teen meets on a weekly basis during the school year.   Confirmation retreats are held once a year.
