Fr. Matthew Van Smoorenburg, L.C.
Parish Administrator, appointed to St. Brendan’s March 19, 2012
“I hope to offer you my best in terms of spiritual guidance and leadership because, as you know, for each of us the long-term goal is heaven. The greatest gift that I can bring you is not myself or my physical presence, but Christ, present to us all in the Eucharist. It is, after all, Christ who helps us reach that ultimate goal. Additionally, I will make every effort to be available to help you and your families to assist you in whatever I can as a priest.”
Fr. Matthew’s last assignment was in Cincinnati, OH where his work was focused in an educational arena as a chaplain at a university, grade school and youth camp – all at the same time! His previous work experience has also involved family counseling, spiritual guidance and giving retreats to small groups. You will find that Fr. Matthew wants very much to get to know you and hopes to have the chance to visit with you and your family. He would welcome the opportunity to bless your homes or businesses as he has for many of his friends in the past.
“While I am confident that we will get to know each other well, I do want to share a little about myself. My favorite sport is football, but I do like to play tennis. Though not my very first priority, I will certainly be looking for a court and some tennis partners. I grew up on a dairy farm and my father was a real businessman so I take interest in things like that. My family immigrated to America from Holland, so I have an appreciation for diverse cultures. I speak Spanish, learning it in Europe, where I studied. I’m an engineer so I also like to build things.”
In his first few months at our parish Fr. Matthew has found everyone to be very welcoming and very much alive with the spirit of God’s love. He looks forward to living and working in Cumming and serving the Lord and our parish in this exciting new assignment as our Parish Administrator.
