St. Brendan Hispanic Ministry

Mission Statement
“To
enrich our Parochial Community with our Diversity of Language and
Culture, Fostering Faith and Hope while providing Support and
Encouragement to our Hispanic Brothers and Sisters Worshiping God as
one Bilingual Community.”
History:
The Hispanic Ministry of Saint
Brendan was formed in the Summer of 2001 by a group of faithful
bilingual volunteers with the vision to foster the fast growing
Latino Community in the South Forsyth area. With the support of
this committee and members of the staff and the blessings of our
Pastor Fr. Willie Hickey the Hispanic Ministry was born. Fr. Samuel
Porras was appointed the first Hispanic priest here at St. Brendan’s
and on November 4th of the same year we celebrated our
first mass in Spanish with an attendance of 85 faithful. Since
then, our ministry has grown 10 times in number. Due to the demand,
a second mass in Spanish was added in October 2003 as well as 6 new
pastoral programs to better serve the needs of the Latino
Community.
Now, as we approach our third
anniversary, we are blessed to welcome Fr. Arcángel Cárdenas as our
new Spiritual Director who is already giving light to our ministry.
The Ministry – Ministries:
“We are more than a name…” our
ministry is proud to serve our community with a Coordinator who,
with the Pastor and the Director of Faith Formation, oversees all
the programs and services provided by this Ministry. Sometimes
people think that we are the “little Church in the Big Church” and
they are wrong: we are ONE Bilingual Church. We just don’t
host a Mass in Spanish, we reach out to our Hispanic brothers and
sisters. Many others in the Parish also reach out to them
throughout the year (Local Charities, Open Arms, MOMS, Liturgy and
Faith Formation, just to mention a few) because we are all ONE in
Christ.

A call to Hispanic Ministry:
At this moment of grace we recognize the
Hispanic Community among us a blessing from God. We need to call
upon all persons of good faith to share our vision of the special
gifts which Hispanics bring to the Body of Christ his pilgrim Church
on earth (1Cor 12:12-13)
Our Future:
We are praying for a better today to enrich
our tomorrow.
Today: Dioceses,
parishes, and the National Council for Hispanic Ministry have made
great strides. But much more is still needed: nothing less than a
total mobilization of the Catholic Hispanic youth across the United
States.
Let’s now pray for a
culturally diverse Catholic Community here at Saint Brendan.
Your Sister on the
Journey, Sandy Spera, Coordinator
